Summer evokes thoughts of strawberries, ice blocks, fresh salads and BBQs—long evenings outdoors or at the beach. It brings sunshine and celebration, but for many whānau it also brings financial pressure. With tamariki home from kura, extra events to attend, manuhiri to host, Christmas gifts to buy, and back-to-school costs looming, budgets can stretch thin.
That's why Gizzy Kai Rescue takes only a short break over the Christmas/New Year period before resuming our kai collection and distribution. For whānau doing it tough, rescue kai offers real relief—easing anxiety, helping make ends meet, and bringing aroha and joy when it's needed most.
Throughout the year, but especially during the Christmas season, it's vital that people feel seen and cared for. Kai is one powerful way we show this.
Summer Food Safety
As temperatures rise, food safety becomes even more important—both for Gizzy Kai Rescue operations and in our own kitchens. Keep these essentials in mind:
Wash hands thoroughly before handling kai
Cook properly to safe temperatures
Cover and chill food quickly after cooking
Transport smart using chilly bins and ice packs
Date and store leftovers correctly
Use your fridge and freezer to keep kai fresh and safe
By staying vigilant with food safety practices, we can all enjoy a healthy, happy summer
