Gizzy Kai Rescue is committed to making a positive impact on the environment through food waste minimisation.

​

By reducing the amount of food going to landfill we are reducing  carbon emissions from both the decomposition of the food in landfill and from freight transporting the waste.

​

This is an area where Gizzy Kai Rescue can also support businesses and event coordinators with ideas and tips on food waste minimisation and formatting plans when there is a possibility of food surplus.

Walking the Talk

We have been measuring the greenhouse gas emissions of our operations for three years now with the help of MyImprint.

Myimprint use the methodologies of ISO 14064-1;2018, the GHG Protocol, and the New Zealand MfE Guidance to measure and report our emissions.

 

Each year we work on how to improve our operation, how to reduce emissions, and be even more environmentally conscious.

 

Ways we operate more sustainably, simple actions such as:

  • Monitoring and maintaining cool storage temperature at optimum levels.

  • Ensuing our fridges and freezes are maintained and modern to reduce greenhouse gas leakage.

  • Planning kai pickups to reduce vehicle use.

  • Turning off the lights when not in use.

  • Diverting unsuitable kai out as animal food or to worm farms, rather than landfill.

  • Recycling where possible.

 

Through our food rescue and redistribution efforts, GKR has prevented approximately 30 tCOâ‚‚e of annual emissions that would have resulted from landfill disposal.

Our commitment to sustainability is yielding results worth celebrating: the latest emission inventory report (FY 2024–25) shows a 16% reduction in total measured emissions compared to last year.
